Etiqa and Takaful Malaysia Emerge as Top Winners in Asia’s First Customer-Driven Motor Insurance Awards
Kuala Lumpur, November 2021 — The Malaysian motor insurance and takaful industry gathered to celebrate its finest as the winners of the prestigious Motor Insurance and Takaful Award 2021/22 were announced — now in its sixth consecutive year since its establishment in 2016.
About the Award
The Motor Insurance and Takaful Award holds the distinction of being Asia’s first independent motor insurance and takaful awards based entirely on customer feedback. Unlike many industry recognitions that rely on financial metrics or peer nominations, this award stands apart for its commitment to transparency and consumer empowerment.
The award is given to the best motor insurance and takaful companies voted by Malaysians themselves — giving every Malaysian access to independent, summarised insights on which companies truly deliver on their promises.
How Winners Are Determined
The survey was conducted online from November 2020 to March 2021, with over 5,000 Malaysians participating. The awards are based on extensive research that ranks insurance and takaful companies using actual feedback from Malaysian motorists with valid motor insurance policies. The final score is calculated based on multiple factors, including customer satisfaction, years with the company, and claims experience.
In total, 17 conventional motor insurance companies and four takaful companies were evaluated. Companies that did not receive a substantial number of responses were excluded to ensure data quality.
The Winners
Best Motor Insurance — Etiqa General Insurance Berhad
Etiqa General Insurance Bhd emerged as the winner in the conventional motor insurance category, reinforcing its reputation as one of Malaysia’s most customer-centric insurers.
Best Motor Takaful — Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Am Berhad (Takaful Malaysia)
Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Am Berhad emerged as the winner in the Motor Takaful category. Upon receiving the recognition, Dato’ Sri Mohamed Hassan Kamil, Group Chief Executive Officer of Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Keluarga Berhad, expressed the company’s pride in being recognised once again by Malaysians as the Best Motor Takaful Company.
Why This Award Matters to Consumers
The significance of this award goes beyond industry prestige. Before motor detariffication, every company charged the same price for insurance because it was fixed by the government. Today, consumers can save over 50% when they compare prices. However, the cheapest price does not always mean the best value — companies now offer different levels of customer service.
Much like how hotel ranking platforms make it transparent whether a property offers five-star or one-star service, these rankings help consumers understand the quality behind each motor insurance provider’s price tag.
Looking Ahead
The Motor Insurance and Takaful Award continues to serve as an important benchmark for the Malaysian insurance industry, encouraging companies to invest not just in competitive pricing but in meaningful customer experience — from smooth policy renewals to efficient and fair claims processing.
For Malaysian motorists, it serves as a practical guide: a reminder that when renewing their motor insurance or takaful, the right choice is one that balances both affordability and the assurance of reliable service when it matters most.
